Anita Sarah Thomas (nee Matthew) Nottingham High School 1975 - 1987 Restorative Dentistry
Dentistry is an exciting careers for those individuals who have a natural artistic flair and an interest in science/medicine.
Following 3 science based A levels I spent 4 ½ years at Leeds University doing dentistry. I had done several work experience placement in both dental practices and laboratory before applying.
Following a 1st year of basic sciences, which was quite tough, I thoroughly enjoyed both the laboratory and clinical work that followed.
After qualification I went to the Manchester Vocational Training Scheme for a year where I realised I wanted to do a postgraduate degree in Restorative Dentistry. I completed two house officer jobs and then did a Masters in Dental Sciences in Restorative at Leeds, which was a on a part-time basis.
I would have loved to pursue a hospital dental career, however due to family commitments, this was not possible. I then worked in the CDS for 2 years before applying for a Clinical Director post at Nottingham. I do a job share and work 3 days a week. Two days are spent covering managerial issues for the 60 staff we employ and I day I work clinically.
To succeed in this career you will need:
- An interest in science and science based A levels.
- Be manually dextrous i.e. good at modelling clay or art.
- Good interpersonal skills to be able to communicate with anxious patients etc.
