Film Production - Uzma Hasan - Bromley High - Class of 1996

I have been working in the film industry for the past 4 years.  I have worked in both the US and the UK and have also produced music promos, commercials and corporate videos.

I worked on the core production team of the Tribeca Film Festival 2004 and with Focus Features on the post production of Mira Nair's film VANITY FAIR.  I am currently Assistant Producer at slingshot - a film production and distribution company - where I work across development and production.

Before moving into film, I worked as a Public Relations Consultant for international corporations such as NEC and Verizon and helped to launch mCubed Magazine in the US, an arts and cultural magazine aimed at young Muslim professionals.

I have a First Class degree in English Literature from University of Wales, Cardiff and a post graduate in Film and Literature from Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Science where I was awarded a scholarship by the Kennedy Memorial Trust.

I am happy to offer advice to anyone interested in the film industry whether production, screenwriting, directing or another aspect of the industry.  I can also offer internships in the production company where I work.

For anyone considering a career in the film industry I would give the following advice:

  1. Do as many internships as you can – both in production companies and on film sets as a runner

  1. Take short courses in the holidays - screenwriting, directing, acting – whatever takes your interest. It will often highlight skills you never knew you had.

  1. Watch A LOT of films. Go to the cinema and watch DVDs.  Learn about cinema history.  Learn to recognise a good story.

  1. There is a whole INDUSTRY out there – learn about it, speak to professionals, you may discover that you don’t want to be a screenwriter but a development producer

  1. Use your holidays wisely. You have three months off in the Summer – make a short film, write a screenplay, work as a runner on a film set, do an internship in a production company.  Time is precious.

  1. Learn to love IMDB.com!
