ELAINE DENNISON - Sutton 1972-1985
Medical Research
I qualified from Cambridge University in December 1990 and undertook house jobs in Addenbrookes Hospital (medicine) and Peterborough District Hospital (Surgery) before starting a medical rotation in Southampton. After obtaining my Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, I began a period of research (as Wellcome Training Fellow in Epidemiology) at the Medical Research Council Environment Epidemiology Unit, Southampton into determinants of bone loss in a cohort of men and women aged 60-75 years. I was awarded her PhD in 2000. I have recently completed my training as a rheumatologist, with my CCST due for award in September 2002. This training has been achieved as a flexible trainee in Rheumatology, while continuing postdoctoral research at the MRC Unit. In October I plan to relinquish my NHS duties, while continuing a research career.
My advice to anyone considering a career in medicine would be:
- Consider all options – I planned a period of research purely to “round off” my CV, with the intention of taking up a District General Hospital post i.e. not the academic route I have taken, and loved.
- Explore options such as flexible training, particularly if you have other commitments (e.g. small children).
- Take advice from as many of your supervisors/ consultants as possible – and if you have a career in mind, discuss it with them.
I would be happy to be contacted by email, but please not that I will be on maternity leave from mid December 2002 to May 2003. I can advise on careers but perhaps not work placements and experience.
