University visits for GDST Sixth Formers

You have reached the home stretch…only a few more exams stand between you and leaving your school years behind you!  You may have been waiting for this day to arrive, eager to move on, or you may be more hesitant about what to expect.  Is it really a ‘big bad world’?

Applying for university was always one of those things that loomed in the distance when you were younger, wasn’t it?  You knew that eventually that day would arrive, but where did the time go and why did it have to happen now, while you are so busy with all your schoolwork!

No matter how much you speak to friends, parents and teachers, it is very hard to know what to expect when you actually get to your university. However, to help ease the transition from your school to university life, Minerva has begun a programme of university visits.

You will have your own expectations and requirements and it is important to identify what these are and address them right from the outset of your application.  It is tempting to apply for prospectuses from  many universities, but chances are, after an initial flick through, they will sit in a corner of your bedroom gathering dust.  However, once you have identified a university with a course that you are really interested in, there is nothing better than actually going to have a look at the university – after all you will be spending three (or maybe even four) years of your life there!

If you come on a Minerva University visit, a former Trust student, who is currently studying at the university, will accompany you.  Believe it or not, just having a Trust education in common really helps to break the ice and will make your visit not only a lot more enjoyable, but hopefully, because you will feel more relaxed, it will also be more productive.

It is so important whilst you are on site to feel able to ask any questions you need to be answered.  For example, what is the Student’s Union really like; does it cater to your tastes, and which are the best halls of residence?

Please see some comments that we have had from the visits that we have already run.

“I had a great day and it helped bring university a little more into perspective, especially the importance of the place where you study as a home for quite a long time.”

“I think that having old Trust students is a great idea and it was good to get an informed opinion from someone who knows what it is like to move from the same kind of school environment as me to university.”

“It was a really enjoyable day, it was a perfect opportunity to get to know the colleges a little better and allowed us to get a good feel for the City as a whole.”

“ The “guides” were brilliant and honest, which was cool.  Thanks for a great day!”
