Work Experience - Ella Thomas

For my two week period of Work Experience, I went to Cube Magazine. Cube is a Sheffield based magazine written by young people for young people. It gives students who are interested in Media the chance to get a glimpse into the world of Journalism and be published in a professional magazine.

Personally, I found my time at Cube a fantastic experience and there are several reasons why I think it has helped me. Firstly, Cube taught me so much about Journalism, a world which I knew about but didn’t know the ins and outs. I was given tips about how to write good articles and reviews as well as learning journalistic lingo. Not only had that but the hands on approach taught me a lot too. I was able to do interviews for Cube radio which young people don’t tend to get the chance to do.

Secondly, I loved the fact that I was able to write an article. Cube allows you to write about your chosen subject and watch it get published in a magazine which is distributed throughout the whole of Sheffield. To be given the chance to have a feature in an article is so rare and precious. That alone made the experience worthwhile as I can go away knowing that I been given a head start in my Journalistic career.

Also, Cube gives you the chance the work for a magazine even after your 2-week period. If you worked hard enough and put the effort in, they may ask you back and be given chances to learn and discover more about the media.

Finally, working with the magazine was, to be honest, fun. Being able to work with people from other schools in a laid back environment made the experience so much more pleasurable. As well as all the reviews and articles, Cube also allows you to get involved with making short films, photography and other great stuff. It made you want to go back and do more work for the magazine because you enjoyed yourself so much.

When I heard about work experience, I felt that it was a little bit pointless. But after my experience I’ve realised how important it is to try and work a field you are interested in and investigate a career you may want to pursue. Work experience for me was a really valuable experience and I think that everybody can benefit from going.
