For a small, landlocked slice of country nestled between imposing Asian neighbours China and India, the Kingdom of Nepal can sometimes be overlooked. After all the hype and excitement, a group of 19 Durham University students finally arrived to start their Nepali adventure over the Summer holidays. No amount of planning, or reading of Lonely Planet could prepare me for what I discovered. From August til mid-September I began to appreciate how much Nepal has to offer, and not just to students.

On arrival at Kathmandu airport after a long flight via Bahrain, we were greeted by school children who our group had raised money to support. The traditional Nepali welcome involves being blessed with red tika, placed on the forehead and a necklace of flowers, and it really was a most humbling experience.
