Publications Enjoy a walk down memory lane ‘Memories, Milestones and Miscellanies’, published by Norwich High School for Girls
See the archives of Norwich High School for Girls brought to life in a new book, ‘Memories, Milestones and Miscellanies’. Written by Alan Brodie, Head of History at the school from 1977 to 1997, and edited by local author Sheila Upjohn, a former Norwich High School pupil (1943-49), the book charts 125 fascinating years. Photographs and facsimiles bring the words to life for each year of the school’s history up to the millennium.
From the school’s beginnings at Churchman House in St Giles in February 1875, through two world wars and right up to the present day, ‘Memories, Milestones & Miscellanies’ is sure to jog countless memories. The purchase of the first school computer in 1978, for example, launched the school into the computer age - Norwich High School became the first girls’ school in the UK to run its own computer system!
The book also offers an absorbing insight into local history – the Baedeker raids on Norwich in 1942 and the ‘Great Freeze’ in 1963, when the River Yare froze solid, both had a huge impact on school life and on the people of Norfolk generally.
Headmistress Valerie Bidwell conceived the idea of bringing the archives to life in book form. “It really was an exciting project for all involved and we are thrilled with the result”, commented Mrs Bidwell. “It is more than a summary of school life. It is also a reflection of the issues facing people throughout the country over the past 125 years, particularly those relating to women.” ‘Memories, Milestones & Miscellanies’ is available from the Norwich High School for Girls office, priced £8 (or £12 to cover postage and packing, if required).
