FORMER STAFF NEWS

Sue Loughbrough has kindly allowed me to produce the following digest from her comprehensive newsletter recounting the activities of former staff. This fascinating account reveals the enterprise, energy and, may I add, eccentricities of some who have been recently liberated from the discipline of the schoolroom, from Heather Coombs’ extensive travelogue to Janet Anderton’s hair raising experience of sky diving.

Heather and George have certainly enjoyed their first year of retirement including visits to Hong Kong (not to mention Chinese cooking), Vienna at Christmas time, to USA to see their granddaughter and to Rome and Tuscany as well as travels in England! Judith Peters’ story begins with her daughter’s wedding and proceeds through Japan, France and Spain. Dillon Gardiner combined her sporting activities with visits to Istanbul and Sydney. Meurig Thomas not only keeps in touch with teaching but also contemplates a trip on the new Cunard Liner Queen Mary II to New York.

Nearer home several members are engaged in studies, Christine Huett in Art and Literature, Joyce Leech working for an Arts degree and Beryl Footman in Jane Austen, while Mary Ashworth reflects on her 40 years of teaching and Shirley Hoskins is actively involved in village life. Bunty Cardwell has produced a most informative tribute to two of her most distinguished pupils who have gained recognition as outstanding novelists – Julie Myerson (Pike) and Helen Dunmore. On a quieter note Elizabeth Jones portrays an idyllic picture of her village life while June Harrison describes with pleasure her spectacular views from her bungalow in Cumbria in spite of threats of tidal surges.

The visit from my sister from Argentina, combined with numerous celebrations for my 80th birthday shared with Kathleen Reddish and Jean Collett made this for me a truly memorable year.
