Celia Bagshaw – Took part in three expeditions to Chile and Costa Rica last year as a medical officer for Operation Raleigh. The expeditions consisted of between 20 and 30 people of mixed ability who learnt to live and work together in challenging situations. During her time abroad she lived on a glacier, helped to build paths and slept in snow holes. She also went sea-kayaking. She was apparently very pleased to be voted the least sympathetic of the doctors as this meant that she had succeeded in persuading her team to rally round and work together! Celia is now back in Bristol working in the paediatric department and plans to pursue a career in Accident and Emergency.

When Catherine left university she started work as a house officer at the North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke. She says that she enjoyed it so much that she didn’t manage to leave until August 2003 when she was accepted onto the GP training scheme. She worked as a GP registrar just north of Basingstoke near Aldermaston and heard in July 2004 that she had passed all the basic training requirements to become a fully fledged GP. She says that unfortunately this means that she has finally had to accept that she is a grown-up! In August 2004 she was due to take up a partnership in a 6-partner practice in Basingstoke. She was going to work ¾ time so that she has more time for family commitments. In the past couple of years she has also passed postgraduate diplomas in child health and obs/gynae and she was awaiting results to become a member of the Royal College of GP’s. She says that the High School training in exams has kept her on the straight and narrow! She is now living in Alton with Rob and her three cats, Millie, Mollie and Max.
