A Day at the Docks
with Lehman Brothers

Applications for this year’s Day at the Docks in April have proved that this opportunity is more popular than ever, with almost 100 GDST students applying.  Please see below for more details of what is involved.  If you are interested in applying for a place in 2009 keep an eye on the website for more details in the autumn.

What is it?

Lehman Bros is offering a £5,000 scholarship and the opportunity to experience an internship in their Investment Banking Division to all GDST Sixth Formers.  In addition, finalists will be invited to attend ‘A Day at the Docks’ two day programme and explore the amazing range of opportunities available within an Investment Bank.

How will the winner be selected?

A short list will be chosen as a result of the responses to the essay questions (below).  These girls will all be invited to ‘A Day at the Docks’ in April 2008.  This is the opportunity to get the inside track at one of the worlds leading investment banks, and learn what is involved in banking, in a fun and interactive way.  The 2-day event held on 10th-11th April 2008 will cover a variety of topics and be an excellent opportunity for the students to be immersed in an exciting programme which will stimulate and challenge their expectations; spend time in the offices based at Canary Wharf; and meet some important people within the company.  I enclose a copy of the agenda from last year to give you an idea of what they will be doing.  On the basis of meeting the finalists at their offices the Lehman Bros team will select their winner.

The Prize

The winner will be awarded £5,000, and be invited back to participate in the two-week Women's Immersion Programme. The internship programme is for female candidates in their first-year of study at University.  The programme will increase exposure to and understand the fundamentals of investment banking; gain real-life experience in a fast-paced environment; identify valuable career development skills; meet new people and develop a network for career information and support.

The Programme will offer you the following:

  • Two-week paid internship within one of Lehman  Bros business divisions
  • Networking events with senior business people
  • Career guidance training sessions
  • Feedback and support from Industry recruitment specialists

Who can apply?

This is a scholarship specifically for young women in GDST Sixth Forms.  Although it would be obvious to select those who have an interest in banking, please bear in mind that Lehman Bros are keen to attract students with a wide range of interests, and to dispel some of the myths students may perceive about the banking world - particularly for women!

Lehman Bros are looking for candidates who are ambitious, have strong leadership skills and expect to achieve 3 A grades.

Selection will be made on the basis of the best applications.

What if some of the successful students aren't based in London - how will they manage staying overnight for ‘A Day at the Docks’?

We are offering this fantastic opportunity to students from across the GDST.  Our hope is that the non-London applicants who prove successful are able to arrange their own accommodation (friend or family). For the last two years we had a lot of trouble finding accommodation for non-Londoners amongst the London attendees for our regional attendees. Due to the length of the day, and distances involved, it is necessary for some girls to stay in London for 1 or 2 nights.  Thus, we must ask that a condition of application will be that London based applicants consider whether they are in a position to offer accommodation to one non-London winner, and notify us of this, so that we have an accurate idea of what is available.    This is something we will contact you about upon confirmation from Lehman Bros of a successful application.

How to apply?

Please answer the following essay questions with no more than 300 words each.

  1. If you were given £20,000 to spend on your own business venture, in any way you choose, what type of business would you set up.
  2. Describe your most rewarding leadership experience and what it means to your development as a potential leader.

What is the deadline?

We will require all applications – cover letter, CV and essay response, to be returned to Emily Price no later than 15th January 2008, 5pm.
