GDST/HSBC 2007 Summer School, ‘Innovation through Teamwork’
The GDST/HSBC Summer School took place on 29th and 30th June at Nottingham University, and involved over 60 Sixth Form students from schools across the UK. The theme of the Summer School was ‘Innovation through teamwork’, and it focused on developing leadership and creativity skills as part of working in a team, as well as demonstrating the importance of diversity and the ability to work well with others.
The Summer School was supported by a team of experienced trainers, educational specialists and speakers who are leaders in their field. Among them was Heidi Cooper, who runs her own marketing and PR company, Happy Giraffe, and was named Young Director of the Year 2004 by the Institute of Directors West Midlands, who gave her top tips for building and leading a team.
The young men and women involved were from ten GDST schools and ten HSBC-supported schools in an innovative independent-state school partnership, supported by the HSBC Global Education Trust. Local HSBC directors and management trainees also contributed to the programme as panel members, advisors and speakers.

GDST/HSBC Summer School 2006
75 sixth formers from all over the UK and China tested their team building skills at a pioneering international residential summer school giving them their first taste of university life.
A spectacular performance of Chinese dragons capped a unique weekend event in which students from the UK and China developed their creative, leadership and teamwork skills in a pioneering independent/state school partnership from the 7th – 9th July 2006.
The GDST/HSBC Summer School took place from 7th to 9th July at the University of Nottingham, supported by HSBC.The Summer School involved 75 Sixth Form students of both sexes from the UK and China. 24 students and seven staff from six of the top Chinese schools participated. The whole summer school had an oriental theme, with teams building their own Chinese dragons over the course of the weekend and ‘performing’ them on Sunday morning. Teams won points for appearance, technique and teamwork.
World-renowned author and thinker Dr Edward de Bono opened the event on Friday with a talk about his famous ‘six hats’ approach to creative thinking, as well as his thoughts on the different approaches to creativity in East and West. He told the students “Without creativity, thinking, and the ability to go beyond bare facts and information, we are not going to make progress.”
Other speakers over the weekend included Heidi Cooper, who runs her own marketing and PR company and was named Young Director of the Year 2004 by the Institute of Directors West Midlands, and Sam Eve, a member of the first all-female team to complete the Polar Challenge – a gruelling 365-mile race to the Magnetic North Pole.
Sue Bridgett, who leads the Summer School team, said: “This was a unique event and a great opportunity for students from the UK and China to learn to work together, to learn leadership skills and teamwork and appreciate everyone’s individual input. China has a ‘can-do’ philosophy which is driving its fast-moving economy. To prepare our students to live in and contribute to a global society, we must appreciate China’s increasing influence on the world stage, and developing this sort of educational partnership is very important to that understanding.”

The UK students came from six GDST schools and seven HSBC-supported schools in an innovative independent-state school partnership, sponsored by the HSBC Education Trust. Local HSBC directors and management trainees also contributed to the programme as panel members, advisors and speakers.
In addition to the main summer school programme, a half-day mentor development conference was held on Saturday afternoon for the 18 mentors involved, drawn from the teaching staff of participating schools.
Prior to the Summer School weekend, the Chinese students have stayed with host families from GDST schools, and sampled life in a British school by attending Sixth Form classes there.
